Gruinard Island

The island is Gruinard Island, North West Scotland. During the Second World War it was the scene of experiments in biological warfare. In the autumn of 1941 scientists from Porton Down released anthrax, when the wind was offshore! It Killed the sheep and cattle on the island. In the late 1980's the government sprayed the island with formaldehyde and sea water and by February 1990 the island had been given the all clear. Haswell-Smith says that going above the high water mark is a matter of personal choice, call me fussy but we decided to camp elsewhere.
