Night Paddling Kit

When paddling at night, one of the more challenging problems is keeping in touch with the other members of the group without compromising your night vision. Sarah Clark uses a small item of equipment, which is sold under the name of “Lazer Stik” on the bow and stern of her kayak. Battery powered and waterproof, they can be easily attached to both the bow and the stern of the kayak. Battery life is approximately 12 hours, which is more than sufficient unless you are paddling in the Arctic in December and according to the information they are visible from approximately 1,500 feet (500 metres) in the dark.
They are available in a local outdoor store for £11.50 and because they are reusable they represent excellent value when compared to the light sticks, which most sea kayakers use, and have to be replaced after every night paddle.
The manufacturers have a web site but it wasn’t much use, as access was only allowed if I was a Search and Rescue Professional.
A useful item of equipment which is worth seeking out.
