Onions

A couple of summers ago we were sitting on a secluded beach in Pembrokeshire eating our lunch when a well known environmental writer and superb cook, who was on his first kayaking trip, told us a real gem.
He said that the reason why Ploughman’s Lunches had raw onion in them was because it helps to counteract the effect of sunstroke. Something, which is very important if you happen to be working in the fields all day long. It is equally important if you are a kayaker in a warm climate.

It must be said, that despite extensive attempts at research, it hasn’t been possible to establish whether this particular pearl of wisdom is true or not but it is worth trying and at least your food will have a bit more of a bite.
