Poncho

Kevin Mansell sea kayaking on a cold day

A really useful item of equipment to carry in your kit is a poncho, and particularly a large one so that it is easy to pop on over your equipment. I managed to pick up a heavy duty one in the French sports shop Decathlon. It was an absolute bargain for 4 Euros but I am certain that there would be other reasonably cheap ones available from a variety of shops.

It just sits in the front hatch of my kayak and is ready to put on at any time. It is possible to slip it onto a paddler whilst they are still in their kayak on the water, going over all of their equipment, including the buoyancy aid. Providing an effective extra layer when an individual is feeling the cold.

It is most useful when on a day trip during the less warm months of the year. When stopping for lunch it is easy to pop on whilst sitting on the beach or rocks. You will then benefit from the extra warmth whilst having your sandwiches and just throw it back into the hatch just before carrying on.

For 4 Euros you can’t really go wrong. A cheap and effective item of equipment.
