The Environment

In the same way as other outdoor enthusiasts, sea kayakers have a responsibility to ensure that our impact on the environment is a negligible as possible. The table below is a gentle reminder, if not rather alarming, of how long some materials take to decompose. It goes without saying that we should all 'take home what we took out!'

....... and don't forget - materials take much, MUCH longer to decompose in colder climates.

This article has prompted Henry Van der Kolk to submit this photo. It clearly demonstrates that some individuals have little regard for their environment. Apparently, this National Park can only be accessed by water, but he doubts if this mess was left behind by a kayaker. It reminds me of a one night stop on a remote beach in Greece that was in such a state that we decided to have a go at clearing it up. Four of us spent an afternoon collecting flotsam and debris left by visitors, but we made very little impact! Sad!
